One question I hear quite often from our security school students is how do I get a job with no experience?
Traditional wisdom would tell us that the person with more experience will get hired first but that isn't always true. Many security employers would prefer to hire somebody new to the industry as they are open to being trained, learning the job that they are hired for and doing what is asked of them.
Below are my top 3 suggestions for anybody looking to get started in a new industry:
1. Complete as much training as possible and not just the minimum required training for the position. Training doesn't have to be overly expensive and if you take the time with research there is plenty of free or low cost training available to you.
2. Let a professional create your resume and cover letter. If you do it yourself chances are it won't be that great.
3. Network, Network, Network! Yes it is who you know and not what you know. Sorry but it's true. Good news is you probably know somebody so bug them until you get hired.
4. Last but probably most important is to be open minded to starting per-diem or part time. Work hard, do what is asked of you and prove yourself to get the full time position. Hard work and dedication go a long way. Good luck!
